When I discover about the existence of the baking-steel Modernist here ! I straight sent the link to some friends, One of them, Yann, told that his wife has family in US, and that he could manage to get one for himself and he would try to get more if possible.
But that I should also try on my own, so I decided to straight contact bakingsteel, to get accurate information regarding the delivery possibilities.
Yann posted a request on Facebook and within a day or 2 he got a positive feedback. Last week I got a call from him saying that it was ok for me too !!! Yeahhhhhhhh !!!!! And that a friend of the family would come to Switzerland and that I would get my Backingsteel on the 26 of May. So that was the big surprise !!!
The 2 Bakingsteel’s Journey to Switzerland was pretty long and the last part even longer.
When the Friend Larry, reached the check-in it appeared that his luggage couldn’t be checked, 20kg of steel plate plus other stuff exceeded the allowed weight,.. isn’t it strange ;o) ? As his cabin-luggage was almost empty, Larry decided to let one plate in his checked luggage and take one in his hand luggage. On his way to the plane the luggage had to be opened at every X-ray check and at the end of the trip the checked luggage was missing, it arrived 1.5 day later. I guess it’s not every day that a guy carries 20 kg of steel by plane to bring to friends a kitchen tool to make pizza … ahahah!!!!
When Yann received our plate from Larry, he tought that the transport story of the two Bakingsteel was perhaps not over! Well, I tell you. It wasn’t !
After he brought the two pieces in his office, he went quietly home, as he was by bike and couldn’t carry them.
So, Saturday morning, Yann take all his family with him and drive into town to go for shopping. They pass by Yann’s office to take the plate. On the way back from shopping they find their beloved Polo to go home and there at the exit of the garage Yann is unable to pass the first, third and fifth gear! They are on an avenue in downtown Lausanne. Fortunately, he can still put the second gear. panicked, they calm down and think about the future… Unable to mount at home as it rises steeply in Lausanne. They decide to continue their way but down, for a parking lot and call the « safety car ». After 5 minutes, they find the safest place to stop with 2 Bakingsteel in the trunk….. the parking place in front of the Church of Saint-Jacques, It was a sign …
It is now 13.15 and all the family is starving! Safety car should arrive in 45 minutes. So they search in the shopping bags but there is nothing to eat on the go. And now…. It’s starts to rain cats and dogs fortunately the Safety car arrives earlier than expected… It appears that the rod of the gearbox is broken. It should tow us to the garage! The guy is looking to install the ring rope and he discover our two beautiful stones … He does not know yet what these heavy steel plate are for!
He bring all the sweet family home and Yann go with him to the garage. The guy kindly propose to bring Yann back home with his shopping bags…he asked if everything from the trunk shall be taken home…. What a question?! It is obvious that we take at least these two plate with us. Once home Yann tell him that these stones are used to cook pizzas. He think Yann is crazy ! Ahahah well we Are !!! That’s all for the Saturday.
On the Sunday Yann did the last part of the journey, by public transport the path of my plate was Chailly – Lausanne Station (bus), Lausanne-Neuchâtel (by train) and Neuchâtel-Bevaix (by train) and 15 minutes walk from the station Bevaix to our other friend Gregoire by whom I received my expected pizza cook. Yann hands, after the transport were very painful. The straps of the bag sawed his hands he almost couldn’t hold the nice glass of wine proposed to him ;o)
Well … that’s the end of the of the Bakingsteel journey story !! Just amazing !!!!
A thousand thank you for the this transport. Whenever we’ll use our Bakingsteel we will think about Larry at the CheckIn trying to negotiate to carry these cursed stones.
Thank you Larry, you are THE BEST!
to be continued…
